Sustainable Development Goal, India Index 2018.

It is an ambitious commitment by world leaders which set out a universal and an unprecedented agenda which embraces economic, environmental and social aspects of the well being of societies.
  • 17 Goals, 169 Targets and 306 National indicators with a deadline of 2030, was adopted by 193 Member States at the historic United Nations General Assembly Summit in September 2015, and came into effect on January 1, 2016.
  • The SDGs for 2030 evolved from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for 2015.
  • MDGs were a set of 8 international Development Goals with 18 quantifiable targets for the year 2015 set by the Millennium Summit of the UN in 2000.

  • Detailed information of the Goals will be provided for the Target 2030.
  1. No Poverty :- End Poverty in all its forms everywhere.
  2. Zero Hunger:- End Hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.
  3. Good Health & Well being:- Ensure healthy lives and promote well being for all at all ages.
  4. Quality Education:- Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
  5. Gender Equality:- Achieve gender equality and empower all womens & girls.
  6. Clean Water & Sanitation:- Ensure availability and sustainable Management of water and sanitation for all.
  7. Affordable and Clean Energy:- Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
  8. Decent Work and Economic Growth:-Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable, economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
  9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure:- Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
  10. Reduced Inequality:- Reduce inequality within and among countries.
  11. Sustainable cities and communities:- Make cities and human settlement inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
  12. Sustainable consumption and production:- Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
  13. Climate Action:- Take urgent action to combat climate change and it's impacts.
  14. Life below water:- Conserve and sustainable use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development.
  15. Life on land:- Protect restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
  16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions:- Promote peaceful and inclusive institutions at all levels.
  17. Partnerships for the goals:- Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

India Index 2018

NITI AAYOG published the report of Indian states and Union territories for the #Target2030 as it will help in the preparation of SDGs.
The ranking were given on the basis of 13 out of 17 SDGs (SDG 12,13,14&17 not included). Which is calculated on the set of 62 Priority indicators.

Key features:-

  1. Relevance to the SDG targets.
  2. Guided by the National Indicators Framework (NIF)
  3. Availability of data at national level for states and UTs from official statistical systems.
  4. Consent from respective Ministries/Departments.
  5. Ownership of data by the data source Ministries.
  6. Sufficient Data Coverage.

Limitations:-

  1. Exclusion of goals.
  2. Selection bias.
  3. Indicators emerging from the State scheme not included.
  4. Limitation of equal weightage.
  5. Missing Data.
