One Nation - One Election || Vivpost

PM Modi in 2016 gave an idea to conduct simultaneous elections throughout the country consist of Lok Sabha elections with State Assembly elections. That gave it the name "One Nation- One Election". After a dominant performance in 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, PM Modi again making move to discuss the future of One Nation-One Election. All party meeting was held on 19th June to have a widespread discussion and suggestions about this proposal.
Let us understand what this proposed proposal is about:-

One Nation - One Election

Currently, India holds the election for Lok Sabha and State Assembly separately, when the 5yr term of the government ends or the assembly dissolves. As the name suggests, the proposal includes a single time election for LS and State, that means the election will be carried out simultaneously and for that, the whole structure of India Election should be synchronized and a defined procedure should be decided. Currently, there is a lot of differences between the timing of elections in states.
This comes after the 2014 general election although the matter is not new and was discussed previously and because of the dissolution of some Assemblies in 1968 and 1969 and LS in 1970, the elections were held separately from then.

In Favour of

1) It will reduce the cost for Election Commission, carrying the simultaneous election will be a lot easier in term of economically and preparatory point of view.
2) Continuity of Policies as it is now halted due to Model Code of Conduct.
3) The efficiency of Government:- They will then focus on governance as elections will be only one time.
4) People will be benefited as only one time or in one phase they have to vote.
5) Reduced time wastage of political parties for election campaign and conducting rallies, all the propaganda used only once. It will also help political parties to save money used in elections.
6) A strong voter turnout can be expected, as per the Law Commission.

In Against of

1) Firstly, to synchronize both center and state elections is a tedious job.
2) People perspective can be altered, let this understand via an example, Center election has a dominating face NaMo but because of that, the state assemblies can be affected as people will vote according to popularity. A current wave means a single party sweeps all seats over India and that is not what democracy is about.
3) Local Political Parties will be in danger as people tend to vote for the same party for both the Center and state election.
4) To get states and Center elections synchronized, President rule will be applied to state which completes its 5 yr earlier than other states, this will be nonacceptable according to Indian Constitution.

After the recent meeting, it seems that the idea was not liked by many even AIADMK refused to support this idea and several party leaders not attended it.
